Did you ever hear about “active loudspeakers”?
Personally, I knew the term, but did not really know what it could mean.
Since a few weeks, I know that it is just another term for “Superior Sound by Design”.
For some years a friend of mine and myself are using any occasion to visit Hifi stores and check out loudspeakers, expensive CD players, amplifiers and everything typically associated with high-definition stereo equipment.
Now, more or less accidentally, we stumbled over Backes & Müller, a very small German manufacturer. But as small as the company as gigantic the sound of their speakers is!
For more than 30 years, this company dedicated all their work to developing “active” speakers with the best sound possible.
“Active” often is only understood as loudspeakers with build in amplifiers. This means, you do not need a huge and expensive amplifier anymore. CD players, tuners and so on can directly be connected to the loudspeakers. The known power amplifiers are eliminated by separate amps in each of the speakers.
But B&M is going a big step further. Their low-frequency chassis are equipped with acceleration and amplitude sensors. With these sensors, the build in electronics are constantly checking if the speaker is exactly doing what the input signal indicates. If not, the control is reacting accordingly.
Additionally to this, the acoustical design as well as all electronics are made in a way there is no phase-delay between the various frequencies. This bad behavior is common to each passive speaker simply because of nature of traditional frequency separating filters but not existing with these fantastic speakers.
The result is an unbelievable clarity of sound which lets me think “this sounds even better than live”. Dry, exact and strong bass – down to never heard 20Hz or so. Light, elegant mid tones. Completed with detailed, crystal clear high frequencies.
This topic is almost impossible to describe with words. Therefor, if you ever get the chance, try to find a dealer where you can listen to this loudspeakers. I promise, you will be totally blown away…
As and engineer, I am convinced. As a music lover, I heard nothing comparable so far. Now, I just need to find the money to replace my current equipment.
